Melasma is a very common condition seen more often in females as brown pigmentation on the cheeks, nose, eyebrows, upper lip. It appears in genetically predisposed individuals and exacerbates after sun exposure. Hormones (estrogens) and some medicines may aggravate the problem. Strict sun avoidance is necessary for control of this pigmentation problem. Sunscreens with higher SPF may be used regularly.

Various topical creams may be used to bring down the pigmentation. Chemical peeling is also useful. Fractional Erbium-YAG laser or Q-switched Nd-YAG Laser may be tried in refractory cases.
