Wrinkles Treatment

Why do people get wrinkles ?

Wrinkles form when the skin loses its elasticity. As long as the skin is supple, any creasing of the skin disappears as soon as you stop making the expression that caused it. But skin that has lost its suppleness retains the lines formed by smiling or frowning, for instance, even after you have assumed a more neutral expression. Over time, these lines deepen into wrinkles. Some amount of wrinkling is a result of aging and is probably inevitable; no matter what you do, you will develop some lines if you simply live long enough.

As we age, our skin becomes both thinner and dryer, both of which contribute to the formation of wrinkles. But other factors help to determine both the rate and the extent of wrinkling, including diet and nutrition, muscle tone, habitual facial expressions, stress, proper skin care, exposure to environmental pollutants, and lifestyle habits such as smoking. Heredity probably also plays a role. The most important factor of all is sun exposure

Is it possible to get rid of my wrinkles ?

Effective treatments are now available which can take off your wrinkles or atleast reduce them. Chemical peeling, Botox injections, Soft tissue filler injections, Dermabrasion, Laser resurfacing are some of the most effective treatments for wrinkles.

What is Chemical peeling ?

Chemical peeling is a simple procedure which can improve superficial wrinkles. It is commonly performed with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) obtained from various natural sources. The treatment is finished in a few minutes and requires about 4-6 sittings at weekly intervals for good results. Maintenance peels, once a month, are very popular for continued benefits.

What is Botulinum Toxin? How Does It Work in Wrinkles?

It is a toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. When ingested in large quantity, the toxin causes paralysis of muscles. When injected in very small amount into a particular muscle it causes paralysis of that muscle only. Therefore if it is injected into the small groups of muscles which cause frowning and wrinkling, the frown lines and wrinkle lines will disappear leaving surrounding muscles to function as usual. The toxin is injected with a very fine needle attached to a small syringe to treat:
- Frown lines (mid forehead)
- Crow's feet (side of eyes/cheeks)
- Forehead wrinkles

How Long Will the Anti-wrinkling effect of Botulinum Toxin lasts? What are the Side-Effects?

The anti-wrinkling effect sets in within three to four days after the injection.  The anti-wrinkling effect of Botulinum Toxin lasts for three to four months only. There is individual variation. Gradually the wrinkling muscle function returns and wrinkles reappear. When this happens a repeat treatment is necessary to maintain the desired results. With repeated treatments, the interval between injections increases.

Botulinum Toxin injection is a relatively safe procedure. Side-effects are uncommon. They are usually related to the injection procedure itself. There may be slight discomfort from the needle prick and a small chance of a bruise developing aournd the injection site. Slight drooping of the eyelids may occur but this is uncommon and transient and usually not noticeable. Transient headaches may occur. No permanent side-effects from Botulinum toxin injection have been reported so far.

What can be done for deep wrinkles ?

Soft  tissue fillers like Human Collagen, Restylane can be injected below the skin to cover up deeper wrinkles. They can also be used to add a fuller, more sensuous look to the lips. Your doctor may decide to use these injections along with Botulinum Toxin injection or Laser resurfacing for better results.

What is Laser resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is the precise ablation of superficial skin lasers which stimulates collagen remodelling and new skin growth resulting in improvement of wrinkles. Laser resurfacing may be Ablative where the upper layers of skin are completely removed. Fractional Laser Resurfacing is the latest technology where tiny islands of skin are removed from the skin with normal skin in between the laser pulses. As the laser treatment appears as tiny dots or pixels on the skin, it is also called PIXEL Laser resurfacing. Fractional Laser resurfacing is very safe with minimal down time .
